back from europe! [22 Jul 2006|09:17am]
[ mood | nervous ]

17 days of travelling was starting to take its toll. good thing i didn't catch the measles from germany. my dad and i took a tour of 9 countries in europe and by the end most of the people had become friends, and we had a pretty funny tour guide named steve who carried an orange umbrella and chain-smoked. i guess being a tour guide is pretty stressful.

london was okay... the local tour guide there stuttered and spat when he talked so i could hardly understand him. paris was GORGEOUS but crowded as hell. i wish we could've stayed at the louvre longer than just enough time to see mona lisa, venus di milo, and winged victory of samothrace. um.. versailles was pretty cool too. then onto italy. milano was pretty blah except for the statue of da vinci. all the churches we visited, especially st. peter's and the duomo of brunelleschi in florence we breathtakingly BEAUTIFUL!! you certainly don't see stuff like that in the states because we are devoid of culture. the local tour guide in rome had a super thick accent and added an AH to every word he said. weAH areAH nowAH visitingAH st. peter's basilicaAH, eh? myAH englishAh, ees prettyAH good, EH? in venice our bus broke down in 100 degree weather and we had to WALK almost 2 miles to the restaurant for dinner. no one complained, so that was good even though we were all melting. the next day, we got a new bus and driver, although the old one made off with our tips for the whole trip. shady italians. the next few countries were okay, but vienna and budapest had good food, especially the goulash. mmmmmm.... a bunch of people on the tour went out at night in austria and brussels and got drunk and had good conversation. i had this fruity reddish beer. really good.
the last place we visited was amsterdam. wow...seriously the most liberal place i've ever been. we're talking big red light district with sex shops and window girls, legal gay marriage, "coffeeshops" where you can smoke/eat pot legally (special brownies are called "space cakes.") we even visited the sex museum, which was really crazy.

throughout the whole trip, we had mostly mediocre food but some interesting meals. the escargot was actually pretty good, but the goose liver was disgusting. i ate pasta every day in italy but their chicken was too dry and their water was 8 euros a bottle. sometimes the best food was at the rest stops, in austria especially. steak for lunch! at a rest stop!

we went through 5 bus drivers. spent tons of money on souvenirs and my leg is still cramped up from all that walking and sitting. i even met a girl who went to cal and a guy who will be a freshman at cal, and saw lots of random people in europe with cal hats and shirts.

best: rome, paris, goulash (beef stew) in hungary, the swiss alps (we went up 10,000 feet), gelatto in italy
worst: HOT weather in italy, cramped bus, having to pay to pee.

and now.. corporate slavery begins. sigh.

had a great weekend hanging out with nitzya and the guys at the lanzafames' island. i wish we could've stayed longer. then had two sleepovers in a row with daisuke and hoh, just talking late into the morning about whatever. didn't get much sleep this weekend, but it was the best weekend of the summer so far. now im getting ready to jet off to europe for a few weeks with my dad. maybe we'll even run into robert and jeff in italy, but i kinda doubt it. that would be so cool though. la is HOT!!! can't wait to get outta here.

another graduation perk [23 Jun 2006|04:15am]
[ mood | happy ]

my cousin offered to buy me some architecture/art/design books from this famous store in santa monica as a graduation present. you probably don't care what the significance in that is, but i'll tell you anyway. i LOVE architecture/art/design books, but i can't afford them because they're so damn expensive because they're so damn hip. i love flipping through them and getting ideas and crap, although i usually never end up using them. but who cares, they're pretty and when it comes to design, looks matter the most. very thoughtful of him. so next weekend i hope to go over to the store and look at the books in person because the website doesn't do them justice. then i leave for europe! i am so spoiled. but whatever, i graduated from cal after working my ass off with a decent gpa, so i deserve a lil something special. i'm gonna be like a fat kid in a candy store. praise the lord!

more boring tidbits about me: i can't wait to finish summer school, but i don't wanna work because i like my freedom. my burn wounds are healing too slowly, and sometimes the ripped skin freaks me out a little. i'm looking for some light summer reading. and people have brought up the fact that everyone who has lived in this room before me has gotten into a relationship while living here, and they expect me to continue that tradition. YEAH RIGHT! not gonna happen. i'm enjoying my freedom way too much.

i wish i had a best friend. well, except for jesus because he's not here physically. like, a best friend you do everything with.. tell secrets, talk about anything, go places, have the same hobbies. i used to have one, but we split in high school because she became kinda slutty. we were best friends since kindergarten. and i haven't had one since. i guess i'm lucky though because instead of having one best friend i have tons of friends. and they're all so different, and i hang out with all different people instead of sticking to the same group all the time, like most people do. i don't have a specific "crew" that i hang out with all the time, i have lots of groups of friends. but still no best friend.

so the water is somewhat back to normal, but my left hand is destroyed. takes me twice as long to do things as it would if i had two working hands. dammit. i don't even think i can hold a trombone properly, since it requires the left hand to support its weight. this sucks so much. on a much less grim note, yesterday's bbq was hilarious. if you ever pass out in front of a group of people, don't be surprised if you wake up with sharpee drawings all over your face, bright pink nail polish all over your hands, and something long between your legs. i will decline to name the victim, but poor guy!

the summer of summers [02 Jun 2006|12:39am]
[ mood | happy ]

the grand european tour has been booked. my dad and i will be hitting up london, paris, switzerland, milan, pisa, rome, florence, venice, austria, germany, belgium, and amsterdam for almost 3 weeks in july. then i start working, which i'm thrilled about and not too thrilled about at the same time. meanwhile, i'm trying to get through summer school without doing TOO much work, looking forward to some calsos, and glad that graduation/moving are over. i'm lucky that the job and the housing pretty much fell into my lap this spring without me having to do much work, when i was busy with studio and had no time to search for a job/housing/new roommates. living on northside should be pretty interesting although i will miss the asian ghetto and telegraph. also, this summer marks the end of parental support and the beginning of life in the "real world." i'll be here and there all summer, sometimes in berkeley, sometimes not. like now. i'm in l.a. for the weekend (sucks).

four years under the belt. [10 May 2006|11:27pm]
[ mood | nostalgic ]
[ music | hail to california ]

graduated today! well, sort of. i guess it doesn't really count if i didn't even bring my hat or bother to dress up properly (i wore jeans and flip flops). i sat by ling, daisuke, chappy, noah, and john. the speaker didn't bother to show up to our graduation, so the chancellor spoke instead. he has a funny accent, kinda lispy. it was HOT, and i received a text message from the wind ensemble. heh. i felt like i just sort of melted in the heat. unfortunately, we were separated from rachel, ryjo, will, and bruno but we met up afterwards. tons of food at the campanile, and then raleigh's afterward. this tops a week of fancy meals, including fenton's and claim jumpers. shat mentioned it would be great if we could somehow combine all of our photos from the past four years, but that would be a HUGE project to undertake, and i'm not sure it'll happen. still, how convenient it would be to have all my memories of my best friends from the past 4 years in one package. sigh. FOUR YEARS ALREADY! these guys and i have been through it all together.. just like we recalled in our north tunnel senior yell, and much more beyond it. and i'm not too sad, because i know many of us will still be around, so those memories are not quite finished. heck i still have one more month of school at cal left because i stupidly decided to take summer school. anyway, tomorrow is a new day, we shall see what's in store. i'll be gone until tuesday, then my last final of the semester, my real graduation, and missing people who will be gone for the summer. life couldn't be better.
